Does numbing cream work for tattoos?

What it does and does not do

Topical numbing works on the surface and wears off, commonly after an hour or two. On a long sitting the second half can feel worse by contrast than it would have without any.

It also does nothing for the ache that builds over hours, which is what most people actually find hard about a long session.

Why your artist needs to know

This is the part people miss · it is not only your decision, because it changes the work.

• Some products tighten or swell the skin, which changes how it takes ink.
• Some increase bleeding, which affects saturation.
• It has to be applied a set time before and wiped off properly, or the stencil will not sit.
• A studio may have a product they are happy with and others they are not.

The things that help more

Eating properly beforehand, sleeping, staying hydrated, and taking breaks when you need them. Those make a bigger difference across a long sitting than anything topical, and they cost nothing.

Paracetamol is fine beforehand. Ibuprofen and aspirin are not, because they thin the blood.
