Irezumi in the ukiyo-e tradition, where the whole body is one composition and every motif, koi, dragon, hannya, peony, sits inside a flow of wind and water.
Japanese tattooing is a language before it is a picture. The classic motifs, a koi climbing a waterfall, a dragon, a hannya mask, a peony, each carry meaning, and the background of wind, water and cloud is not filler, it is what ties the whole piece into one flowing composition. That is why irezumi is planned large, as a sleeve, a back or a bodysuit, rather than as separate small pieces added over time.
At THRONE it is drawn in the ukiyo-e tradition, working with the body’s shape so the design moves the way you do. Pieces this size are built over several sittings, and the plan for the whole is agreed before the first line goes on, so every session adds to a picture that was always going to fit together.

Before you book
Do I have to commit to a full sleeve, or can we start small?
You do not have to tattoo it all at once, but it helps to plan the full piece first. We design the whole composition, then work it in sittings, so each session fits the finished design instead of boxing it in.
What do the classic motifs mean?
Each has its own reading: koi for perseverance, dragon for strength and wisdom, hannya for complex emotion, peony for boldness. We will talk through which suit your idea at the consultation.
Can Japanese work cover an older tattoo?
Often, yes. The bold shapes and flowing background of irezumi are well suited to reworking older pieces. We will assess the existing tattoo before we commit to a plan.
How long does a Japanese sleeve take?
A sleeve or back is a project rather than a single appointment, usually several sittings spaced out to let each one heal. We will map the number and rough timeline once the design is agreed.
