Black & grey realism

Photographic depth built in black ink and smooth grey wash, the style that turns a portrait, an animal or a memory into skin that still reads clearly years on.

Black and grey realism is about tone rather than outline. Instead of a bold line holding the shape, the image is built from smooth transitions of grey, so a face looks like a face and fur looks like fur. It is the most technically demanding way to tattoo, and it is also the most forgiving to live with, because there is no colour to shift and the contrast holds as skin changes.

It suits subjects that need to be recognised: a portrait, a pet, an animal, a single object that carries weight. Larger pieces are drawn as one composition and worked over several sittings, because depth like this cannot be rushed without the detail flattening. Every piece is designed for your placement, never copied from another artist.

Before you book

Does black and grey age better than colour?

In general the contrast in black and grey holds its shape well over time, because there is no colour to shift or fade unevenly. Placement and aftercare still matter, and we will talk both through before we start.

Can you work from my own photo?

Yes, a clear, high-resolution photo is the ideal starting point for a portrait or a pet. We use it as reference and compose an original piece around it, rather than tracing the image directly.

How many sessions does a realistic sleeve take?

It depends on size and detail, but larger realism pieces are usually built over several sittings so the shading stays clean. We will map out a realistic plan at the consultation.

Is black and grey a good choice for a first large tattoo?

It can be. It reads clearly at a distance and does not rely on colour saturation to work. The consultation is where we match the idea to the right placement and scale.

Consultations are free. Bring a reference, a story, or nothing at all.
