Can you donate blood if you have a tattoo?
Yes, but not straight away. NHS Blood and Transplant asks you to wait four months from the date of your tattoo. After that a tattoo makes no difference to whether you can give blood.
The four months
The clock starts the day you were tattooed, not the day it healed. The same wait applies to piercings, semi-permanent make-up and microblading.
The wait covers the window in which certain blood-borne infections would not yet show up on a test. It is a precaution about timing rather than anything to do with the ink.
After that, nothing changes
A tattooed donor is a donor. There is no limit on how much work you have, and nobody will turn you away for being covered.
What they will ask you
When you were tattooed and where. A licensed UK studio is the answer they are looking for, and we are one, so bring the date rather than a guess.
Check before you travel
This is NHS Blood and Transplant’s rule and not ours, which means they can change it without telling us. The current version is on the NHSBT website, and it is worth thirty seconds before a long journey to a donation centre.
