When can you go to the gym after a tattoo?
Give it two to three days before anything light, and at least a week before you work the area properly. Sweat, friction and shared equipment are three of the better ways to get a fresh tattoo infected, and stretching skin that has not closed pulls at the healing.
What the problem actually is
Four separate problems, and which of them applies depends entirely on where the tattoo is.
- Sweat sits on an open wound, and gyms are warm.
- Shared equipment is shared. A bench or a bar is not a sterile surface.
- Friction from clothing, straps and benches rubs at skin that is trying to close.
- Stretching over a joint or a large muscle pulls at a healing tattoo and can affect how the lines settle.
A rough timeline
Assuming an ordinary heal, and adjusting for where it is.
- Days 1 to 3 · walking, and nothing that raises a sweat.
- Days 3 to 7 · light cardio away from the area. Cover the tattoo, keep it dry, wash it as soon as you finish.
- Week 2 onwards · most training, if the peeling has finished and nothing is rubbing directly on it.
- Swimming pools · not until fully closed, which is two to four weeks. That is a different rule and it does not bend.
If you train seriously
Tell us at the consultation and we will plan the placement and the timing around it. A tattoo across a shoulder before a heavy training block is worth moving by a fortnight, and that is easier to arrange before the session than after.
