How long after a tattoo can you swim?
Wait until it has fully closed, which is usually two to four weeks. Pools, the sea, hot tubs and baths all mean soaking an open wound, and that is how tattoos get infected and how ink gets pulled out before it has settled.
What counts as swimming
More than you would think. Anything that soaks the tattoo for more than a minute or two is the same problem.
- Swimming pools · chlorine is harsh on healing skin and the water is shared.
- The sea, lakes and rivers · open water carries bacteria that a closed wound would shrug off and an open one will not.
- Hot tubs · warm shared water is the worst of the list.
- Baths. A shower is fine from the first day; lying in water is not.
How to know it has closed
The peeling has finished, there is no scabbing left, and the surface feels like skin rather than like a graze. Shiny and slightly tight underneath is normal at that point and can go on for months, and it does not stop you swimming.
If any part of it is still flaking, it is not ready, even if the rest looks done.
If you have a holiday booked
Tell us when you book and we will work backwards from the date. A month between the session and the flight is comfortable; two weeks is tight; the week before is not something we will agree to.
The sun is the other half of this. New ink and strong sun is how a tattoo you paid for fades in its first summer.
