Can you tattoo over scars?

Usually, once the scar is fully mature, which normally means at least a year and sometimes two. Scar tissue takes ink differently from the skin around it, so the design has to be planned for that rather than dropped on top of it.

How old the scar needs to be

A year at minimum, often longer, and it needs to have stopped changing. A scar that is still pink, raised or tender is still doing something, and tattooing it while it settles gives you a result that shifts underneath you.

If you are not sure whether yours has finished, send a photograph and we will tell you honestly. Waiting another six months is a common answer here.

What scar tissue does to a tattoo

It does not hold ink the way ordinary skin does. Some areas take it heavily, some barely at all, and the difference is not always predictable before the needle goes in.

Flat, pale scars are the straightforward case and often disappear into a design.
Raised or keloid scars are harder, and sometimes the honest answer is no.
Stretch marks take ink unevenly, so the design works with the direction they run rather than across them.
Textured skin can need a second pass once it has healed, and we will say so before we start rather than after.

What tends to work

Designs with movement and texture, where a little unevenness reads as part of the drawing. Flowing linework, foliage, and anything organic. What struggles is fine geometric work and straight lines, because a line that wavers over a scar is the thing your eye goes to.
